With almost 50 years of winemaking experience behind them, and nearly 2 decades working together as a team, Claude and Daniel are seasoned veterans and masters of the art of classic, hands-off French winemaking.
Claude is a Rhone Valley winemaking specialist who’d been producing some of the region’s easiest drinkers long before partnering up with Daniel in 2004. So when the pair were offered a handful of vineyards and the chance to return to the Rhone in 2013, they both leapt at the opportunity.
They’re passionate champions of the local terroir and grapes - especially Grenache and Carignan - and their aim in every wine is to transport you to their little corner of France. All their wines are an authentic expression of the Rhone, made in the most natural way possible, super elegant and super delicious.

When you taste top-quality Bordeaux like Edouard's, you understand why it's one of the most famous wine regions in the world

We’ve been looking for more classic Bordeaux wines for ages, but finding the right winemaker to make them has been like finding a needle in a haystack, so much of the region is dominated by traditional old estates that just don’t fit the Naked mould. Thankfully a tip-off from our Bordeaux rebel Olivier Cazenave led us to Edouard, a 3rd generation winemaker at his family’s Chateau Le Grand Verdus estate, and as soon as we met him we knew we’d found our needle.
His name may sound like something out of a French nobleman’s court, and his family estate is practically a castle, but Edouard is actually a really forward-thinking guy who understands the need to balance the new with the old. He’s passionate about organic farming and working with nature, and has been introducing loads of changes in his vineyards to encourage the local wildlife to flourish among his vines “It’s no longer about fighting nature, it will always win. It’s about working with it.”
It’s when you taste top-quality stuff like Edouard’s that you understand why Bordeaux is one of the most famous wine regions in the world. From his access to first-class grapes, to his understanding of the technical side of winemaking, to his ability to create uniquely delicious, classic French wines. If you’re a Bordeaux fanatic, Edouard’s is a name to get really excited about.

Talented English émigrés who broke into the exclusive Burgundy club with their super-high-quality, artisan wines

The Raggs have been producing super-posh Burgundy kit since 2004, when they first crossed the channel to turn this famous French region into their home away from home.
Burgundy is one of the most celebrated yet traditional wine regions on the planet, which can make it very tough for outsiders like Michael and Fiona to break through. But having started from square one, they’ve now grown their Mischief and Mayhem winery into a fully-fledged Domaine with some of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the world. They're practically honorary French at this point.
While the locals might scratch their heads at some of the new and exotic approaches this English pair take in the vineyard, one thing they definitely recognise is the quality of the wines they’re making - it’s truly artisan, hand-crafted, world-class stuff.

Born and bred Medoc winemaker who revolutionised his father's estate

The son of a grape-grower in the heart of the Medoc, Guillaume always knew he would one day take over the vineyards worked by his father, and his father before him. But it was his visits to the local cooperative - where his dad’s grapes were blended in with other growers’ - that sparked a passion for winemaking in young Guillaume’s mind.
When he did take over the family vines 30 years ago, all Guillaume had to work with was a few spare tanks and some barrels he found lying around. In the decades since, he’s revolutionised his father’s estate into a fully-kitted out winemaking workshop where he can tinker with every stage of the winemaking process, with a perfectionist’s eye for quality.
His proudest moment was when he won Cru Bourgeois status in 2012, this special honour is awarded only to exceptional Medoc wines that aren’t from the old, big-name chateaus - as a stamp of top quality. It’s a testament to what Guillaume has been able to achieve at his dad’s old estate, and remarkably, he still sees more potential to come out of the old Poitevin vines. Potential he hopes to pass on to the next generation of family grape-growers.
