Herencia Altes La Xalamera 2017
About the wine
A dream single-vineyard Garnacha of stunning depth and complexity, made for special occasions
-
When Núria and Rafael first laid eyes on La Xalamera vineyard, they fell head over heels. It’s 15 hectares of gentle slopes and sun-soaked valleys where 50-year-old Garnacha vines cling to life in chalky soils. The tricky conditions mean the vines produce less fruit but what they do produce is super-concentrated.
-
They knew it was the spot for a dream single-vineyard wine. And so La Xalamera was born. It’s a big, classy red with a smooth touch, chock-full of summer fruits, strawberries and raspberries with a ladle of licorice to top it off, aged in French and Austrian oak to round out the tannins and provide a mouth-watering richness and complexity.
-
This is a special wine best enjoyed with a special meal. It’s got the depth and power to perfectly complement a plump stuffed duck, juicy joint of pork, or roast chicken dinner with all the trimmings. Crack open the bottle to let it breathe, set a timer for Sunday lunch, then pour yourself a glass and experience wine bliss.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Núria Altés and Rafael de Haan
- Núria Altés comes from a long line of grape-growers. From playing in her grandfather’s vines as a child to bottling her first wine with her father’s grapes, Núria is proud of her winemaking roots. So in 2010 Núria and her partner Rafael set up a little winery in the Terra Alta region - called Herència Altés.
- What makes their wines so special is the grapes come exclusively from Núria's family vineyards which host a selection of seasoned old vines ranging from 40 to 90 years old. In other words you're getting impeccable concentrated flavours you don't find on the average supermarket shelf.
- They’ve gone from strength to strength, picking up awards and Parker Points galore. That was until Covid-19 turned their world upside down. Luckily, 3,000 Angels stepped in and snapped up a case of their premium wines. Angel support means they can plan their future harvests with confidence.
