Gonzague Lurton
France
Introducing Bordeaux winemaking royalty
Gonzague is one of ten children of Lucien Lurton, a champion of the region who owned many of its finest estates. The Lurton name still rings widely around Bordeaux today.
When Gonzague’s dad retired in 1992, he divided up his properties between his kids. Having grown up running around his father’s Margaux vineyards, spending summers pruning vines or helping out in the cellar, Gonzague had his heart set on one property in particular and he let his dad know - ‘it’s Durfort-Vivens or bust’. Dad duly obliged.
An illustrious Second Growth estate - right up there with Bordeaux’s best - Durfort-Vivens has a rich history but, since Gonzague took over, perhaps the future is even brighter. Over 30 years, he’s introduced lots of ingenious ideas, like bringing in Geologists to optimise his plots and using terracotta jars for ageing, in the pursuit of pure fruit expression. And in 2013, Durfort-Vivens was the first estate in Margaux to go fully-organic. So for almost 10 years now, every single drop of Gonzague’s wine has been made with 100% planet-friendly, organic grapes. Talk about making a good thing even greater.

When you taste top-quality Bordeaux like Edouard's, you understand why it's one of the most famous wine regions in the world

We’ve been looking for more classic Bordeaux wines for ages, but finding the right winemaker to make them has been like finding a needle in a haystack, so much of the region is dominated by traditional old estates that just don’t fit the Naked mould. Thankfully a tip-off from our Bordeaux rebel Olivier Cazenave led us to Edouard, a 3rd generation winemaker at his family’s Chateau Le Grand Verdus estate, and as soon as we met him we knew we’d found our needle.
His name may sound like something out of a French nobleman’s court, and his family estate is practically a castle, but Edouard is actually a really forward-thinking guy who understands the need to balance the new with the old. He’s passionate about organic farming and working with nature, and has been introducing loads of changes in his vineyards to encourage the local wildlife to flourish among his vines “It’s no longer about fighting nature, it will always win. It’s about working with it.”
It’s when you taste top-quality stuff like Edouard’s that you understand why Bordeaux is one of the most famous wine regions in the world. From his access to first-class grapes, to his understanding of the technical side of winemaking, to his ability to create uniquely delicious, classic French wines. If you’re a Bordeaux fanatic, Edouard’s is a name to get really excited about.

When Jose co-founded Bodegas Jiménez-Land with his cousin back in 2004, things started out as small scale as they get. The pair had a hand in every single task going - ranging from pruning the vines, all the way to in-depth oenological analysis.
That kind of experience is priceless and points to a winemaker with a cover to cover knowledge of their craft. This couldn’t be more true of Jose, who tells us that the magic of winemaking is in watching a wine change and evolve with the time, love and energy you put into it.
Jiménez-Landi wines are fresh and elegant despite the scorching temperature of the region - Sierra de Gredos, in Central Spain. Jose takes a hands-off approach, working with the land and his vines to create stylish and ultra elegant wines that are totally authentic to their landscape.
Every week, on our travels or back at HQ, we come across wines that taste amazing but weren’t made for us by Naked winemakers
At the price and quality, we wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t make them available to you. So we list them without a winemaker or a story under Naked Parcel
They’re generally parcels and one-offs, so once they’re gone, they’re gone!

Serena’s been delighting Angels for years with the top-shelf Italian wines she makes alongside her dad in Piedmont, like Barolo and Gavi di Gavi. Now, she’s also blazing new trails with a set of stunning Moldovan whites that’ve gone gangbusters. We can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve next.
Serena knew from an early age she wanted to follow in the family footsteps… ‘I was 7 years old. Probably as a daughter in love with her dad, it was inevitable :-)’. She’s blossomed into a super-talented winemaker and is making her father proud with every bottle she makes.
Angel support helps Serena continue her family legacy, creating wines from the very same patch her grandad farmed years ago - and it’s also giving her the opportunity to discover new, off-the-beaten-track wines like her Moldovan gems. That’s why she’s so grateful and proud to share her kit with UK wine-lovers like you.

Talented English émigrés who broke into the exclusive Burgundy club with their super-high-quality, artisan wines

The Raggs have been producing super-posh Burgundy kit since 2004, when they first crossed the channel to turn this famous French region into their home away from home.
Burgundy is one of the most celebrated yet traditional wine regions on the planet, which can make it very tough for outsiders like Michael and Fiona to break through. But having started from square one, they’ve now grown their Mischief and Mayhem winery into a fully-fledged Domaine with some of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the world. They're practically honorary French at this point.
While the locals might scratch their heads at some of the new and exotic approaches this English pair take in the vineyard, one thing they definitely recognise is the quality of the wines they’re making - it’s truly artisan, hand-crafted, world-class stuff.
