Gerhard Lobner's Story
I was born into a winemaking family in the south of Weinviertel, and grew up learning the trade. I went on to attend the oenology school in Krems and worked for many wineries abroad, for example in California, Tuscany and South Africa.
Before I joined Mayer am Pfarrplatz and Rotes Haus in 2007, I had been running my family wine estate for 10 years.
I love working in and with nature. When I'm in my vineyards, I know I'm doing the right thing. Nature is our most important partner, and therefore it's essential to listen to it and learn to live with it. Winemaking always keeps you on your toes, as no vintage is ever really the same. Nobody can ever know everything about wine and you never stop learning. Winemaking is a combination of knowledge, experience and intuition.
The combination of terroir and climate, along with our highly motivated and qualified team, bring out the best in the high quality Nussberg vineyard wines.
One of my proudest achievments is becoming the Austrian “Salon“ award winner not once but twice (it's the most prestigious Austrian wine competition), and of couse being nominated as the best wine during the EWBC in Vienna.
The Wiener Gemischte Satz, or field blend, has a very long tradition in Viennese viticulture. A wealth of grape varieties grow in the same vineyard, and all these grapes are harvested and pressed at the same time. This is different to a blended wine, where the young wines are generally fermented separately and then blended together. You could say that for the Gemischte Satz, the marriage of grape varieties begins in nature. The Wiener Gemischte Satz is not only a typical terroir wine, it also stands as a symbol and reflection of the Viennese culture. To produce this traditional wine to the best possible quality, is our paramount goal.
I think our greatest achievements are yet to come. My personal biggest goal is perhaps unattainable, because I want the whole world to have heard about Wiener Nussberg. Who knows, perhaps with Naked Wines help we will get there!
