A child of Tuscany, Maurizio grew up surrounded by some of Italy’s most historic winemaking regions, like Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino, so it’s no surprise he discovered his passion for the craft while he was still just at school.
With a winemaking style inspired by his maestro Giulio Gambelli, a giant of Tuscan wine described by Maurizio as ‘the greatest Sangiovese expert of all time’, for over 30 years Maurizio has worked as an oenologist, helping other winemakers around Italy improve their wines - but his roots are very much in Chianti and in 2015 he fulfilled his life-long dream of making his very own wine there.
Some people told Maurizio he was crazy to start a project from scratch in Chianti Classico. As one of Italy’s most historic wine regions, he knew he’d have to compete with some proper big name wineries who’d been in the region for generations. But Maurizio revels in a challenge. Putting his 3 decades’ experience to good use, in short order he’s established himself as a producer of top-quality Chianti Classico to rival any of the big boys.

Tradition meets the future with this father and son duo making elegant Prosecco in an eco-friendly family winery

From father and son… to father and son. Massimo’s dad set up Isola Augusta in 1959 and Massimo followed in his footsteps, joining him in 1972. Ever since, their family has been crafting top-class Italian wine. Now, Massimo and his son Jacopo continue the family legacy, making superb wines and delicious Prosecco.
Their old-vine winery is rooted deep in the middle of Friuli, near Venice, where winemaking tradition stretches right back to Roman times... and for good reason. You couldn’t design better conditions to make first-rate wines. Baking hot sunshine and strong clay soils mixed with silt and sand produce low yields of high-quality fruit, while the cooling sea breeze lends a zesty flavour and freshness to their kit.
But don’t let Isola Augusta’s history fool you, this isn’t an old-fashioned operation. Both father and son are super-passionate about going green and looking after future generations of Bassani winemakers. They’ve made their winery as sustainable as possible by cutting out all chemical fertilisers, installing solar panels, and reducing their carbon footprint to zero. Saluti. We’ll raise a glass of Prosecco to that.

Recently joined by his daughter, Elisa, this is one dynamic duo and they are very excited to share classic Sangiovese flavours with Angels.
Their passion for their wines is palpable and, with family at the heart of everything they do, we just know they are going to be a hit.
