The Smuggler's Boot Pinot Noir 2017
About the wine
Seriously sophisticated Pinot Noir from the sought after Elgin Valley
- We’ve made $5 million available to help struggling wineries to survive and come out the other side of this Covid crisis. The closure of bars and restaurants across the globe has been a disaster for the independent winemakers who supply them. The little guys, without connections to the big supermarkets, are the ones who are suffering the most.
- South Africa’s lockdown has been one of the strictest in the world - with a total ban on alcohol sales. They're currently in the midst of a second total lockdown, where all wine sales were banned immediately - leaving the industry is on its knees. For a country with wine at its heart, it's been a huge blow. And for small winemakers, it's been totally devastating.
- Seriously sophisticated Pinot Noir from the sought after Elgin Valley. Sumptuous and silky smooth, with juicy red fruit and subtle layers of more savory smokiness. A proper posh drop.

Serving advice
Serve at 15-17°C
Food match
My personal suggestions include charcuterie, its salt and fat being complemented by the delicate spicy notes and fruit. Wild mushroom risotto or for something lighter, a simple beet salad with some hazelnuts and ricotta cheese.
Contains sulphites
Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Richard Kershaw
- He's a tip-off from Rod and Richard proved he is seriously wine savvy when he became a Master of Wine. Not bad for a man from Sheffield!
- Angel funding gave Richard the jump his one-man business needed, allowing him to tap into South Africa's huge potential to make spectacular wines without hiking up the price.
- Unlike the show-off wineries in South Africa, Richard dreams of owning a shed to make wine in. So you're not paying for fancy cellar doors, marble floors, and Michelin-starred restaurants. Just raw winemaking talent, great grapes, and a shed.
