The Falstaff Hotel became the Falstaff Freehouse in 1995 when it was sold by Allied Breweries. It has been in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide ever since. In spring 2003 the Falstaff Freehouse and Brewery were leased by Jim Hallows and his partner Steph Briggs. The brewery was revamped and after delays caused by utility companies the plant was tested and the first brew, Phoenix, was produced on 2nd December 2003. This was so well received by the regulars that the 2 previously best selling real ales were off the bar within weeks! After getting the brewery up and running successfully Jim and Steph have started redecorating and refurbishing the pub. The lounge was the first room to be completed and has been dedicated to Offilers' memorabilia, the Offilers Brewery was located just a few hundred yards from the Falstaff. The games room has been transformed with the removal of the 1950's tiles to reveal the original floorboards together with areas that had been worn away with heavy usage such as in the doorways and an interesting pair of foot sized holes by the flap of the original bar! The two bars are furnished with a large (and growing) collection of alcohol related memorabilia and other stuff, Jim has a thing about wood carvings and barometers! The hallway is home to an interesting collection of old enamel advertisements. The toilets have just been completely refurbished to a very high standard. The outside seating area has been transformed with the help of old whisky barrels. Used as planters alongside a host of other receptacles, including a hollow tree trunk, the concrete yard is now a pleasantly green area. The Falstaff Freehouse is one of a dwindling number of traditional English ale houses. We are open from 12.00 noon 'til 11.00 pm. Sunday to Thursday and from 12.00 noon 'til midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. We generally offer between 4 and 6 different real ales. Fistfull Of Hops 4.5%, Phoenix 4.7% and Smiling Assassin at 5.2% are always available together with changing lower and higher gravity beers. These are generally Falstaff monthly specials although we do have guest beers from time to time, usually new beers from local micros. We are dog friendly and well behaved children are also welcome up to 6.00pm, except in the front bar.
