Broughton Brewery was founded in 1979 by David Younger and James Collins in a former sheep station in the wee village of Broughton in the Scottish Borders. It was the first initiated Scottish microbrewery, which appealed to customers looking for a new “craft beer” experience outside the traditional mass-produced lager and exports. Scots, wanted something more, something dynamic, different, and with real flavour, hop character, and taste. Collins and Younger capitalised on this opportunistic time and they released the iconic beer, the Greenmantle, with its liquorice aromas, bittersweet body and delicious hop aftertaste, this beer catapulted Broughton brewery into mainstream Scotland. The beer was so popular, that locals began referring to the brew house as the Greenmantle Brewery. The beer has forever cemented Broughton's image as Scotland's Original Microbrewery. As demand craft beers grew, so did Broughton's portfolio. Wanting to continue on their microbrewery journey, Broughton shocked the market by introducing the legendary Border characters Old Jock Ale, Merlin's Ale and the Scottish Oatmeal Stout. Each beer was named after a renowned character from the Scottish Borders. These types of ales blazed a trail for new microbreweries and the campaign for real ale (CAMRA). In 1995, Broughton underwent a change of ownership and was taken over by, Giles Litchfield of Derbyshire's Whim Ales, who introduced the now famous “Beers with Character” slogan which was a family of 10 bottled ales. These beers AGAIN, showed Broughton's effort to not only produce small hand crafted ale, but to stay innovative, defiant and forward thinking when it came to making good beer! Broughton is also committed to expanding their export markets for customers around the world. Currently, Broughton Ales is actively seeking for partners/distributors to help share their deliciously hand-crafted ales. Expanding on their current export markets Italy, Germany, France, Denmark, Canada, the United Sates, Broughton will be opening new export markets in Norway, Finland, Sweden, Australia and Japan in 2015. Broughton is committed to making their deliciously crafted beers accessible around the world. The beer market in Scotland has hugely evolved over the past 35 years and through it all, Broughton continues to deliver award-winning beers by brewing with locally sourced water and using only the finest ingredients. Each drop of beer is brewed to have the upmost quality, character and tradition for our beer drinkers.
