Oscar Aragón's Story
Oscar’s family has made wine for personal consumption for as long as records have been kept, but in the 1970s, his father Amalio Aragón began acquiring top vineyard sites in Ribera del Duero. The area had just begun to emerge as the new area for Tempranillo, and in 1982, the new classification of Ribera del Duero Denominacion de Origen (DO) was created. Within the Ribera, vineyards around the village of Quintana del Pidio seemed particularly promising for fine wine production, and that is precisely where Amalio went to purchase his vineyards. In 1995, the family launched their first vintage of the family’s wines, Cillar de Silos.
Oscar decided to study winemaking because grapes from the family’s older vineyards were being vinified at the local cooperative. Oscar thought the fruit deserved to be made into its own wine rather than being blended with all the rest of the area, so he set out to remedy that. He also had a deep love of the land and enjoyed meeting people from different cultures with the same passion for wine.
Ribera del Duero is one of the fine wine hotspots of the world, where high altitudes and old vines make outstanding quality wines. The Aragón family vineyards are located in some of the best sites in the region. The estate remains completely in their hands – every aspect of the wine from vineyard to bottle is managed by them.
Oscar makes elegant wines that showcase purity of fruit and highlight the typicity of the Ribera del Duero terroir. He and his family hand pick grapes from their lower-yielding vineyards, then age the wines so they’re ready to drink now or for decades. In 2010, one of Oscar’s wines, the Torresilo, won the Ribera del Duero Trophy at the International Wine Challenge, and has been rated 92+ by Robert Parker over multiple vintages. Jancis Robinson also named Oscar as one of the region’s leading producers.
Oscar and his family have had his share of struggles in the wine industry. When a company failed to pay the winery’s invoices, they had to painfully watch their wines being sold for less than they cost to make. Then when restaurants closed their doors in 2020, sales stopped almost overnight. That’s where Angels stepped in. With Naked’s $5 million Covid Relief fund, the Aragóns were able to keep their winery up and running and focus on making the best wines possible.
With your continued support, Oscar’s Cillar de Silos wines have found a home at Naked. Oscar, his sister Amelia, and the rest of the family are thankful and thrilled to share their award-winning wines with you.
