Jock Harvey's Story
I grew up amongst the vines as a boy. I have several memories from when I was young... hand-picking grapes, loading grapes onto trailers, drinking constant supplies of Grenache juice, tasting the sweet pink juice that bubbled in the winery fermenters...the list continues.
When I got older, and started arguing with my Dad, I left home to go and work in a winery. I worked 12 hour days, 7 days a week, and I paid more in tax in a week than I ever got paid when living at home. We had a bumper first vintage during my first year, and wine was well and truly in my blood!
It's a fantastic career - an opportunity for adventure, hard work, good food and wine, meeting other wine lovers...
What advice would I offer other winemakers? There are several things...
- Spend the year in the vineyard
- Grow vegetables and understand the season
- Walk through the vineyard in silence � holding a leaf to your cheek (Hmmmm...)
- Taste the fruit and crunch the seeds
- Sit under the vine from time-to-time and relax
It is also the responsibility of a good winemaker to drink great wines and new wines for comparison (alongside eating great food!).
