Portuguese winemaker Hermano Veloso was discovered by Angels in the UK, where his easy-drinking red and white blends have been massive hits. Now his crowd-favorite Portugal wines are coming stateside for the first time!

Hermano Veloso's Story
Hermano wants to champion his home country, Portugal, to as many Angels as possible, which means producing high quality wines of incredible value.
“My dream wine if selling it were not an issue? A red blend of some of Portugal’s 250 grape varieties that can match strong meat dishes or cheeses, and that leaves a long, elegant aftertaste that can transport me to the vineyards and the foggy mornings where the grapes are growing healthy. A wine that pleases the consumers and shows them in a glass that Portugal is one of the most exciting wine countries in the world.”
Learning the Craft
Hermano knew he wanted to be a winemaker at a very young age — just six years old the first time he remembers lending a hand during a harvest (vindima in Portuguese).
“It was a tradition to gather all the family around the winery — pretty soon I got used to the wine and learned a lot about it, which was something that at that time was done with old men with more than 50 ‘vindimas’ of experience. It seemed natural to go this way. Wine is something I always enjoyed. I grew up in the middle of vineyards and at one point my family owned part of a big wine company, so I went that way and never considered any other thing.”
He began his wine education alongside the seasoned winemakers in his family and community, then completed technical courses in Agriculture Management with a specialization in wine production, and for completeness spent a few years working with other wine companies to experience “new techniques and perspectives in the process of making wine.”
When gaining experience in the field brought him to Quinta do Conde, he fell in love with the region and never left.
Learning the Region
Quinta do Conde is located about 30 miles north of Lisbon, in the Alenquer DOC of Portugal’s Lisboa region. Hermano says it is “one of the richest wine regions due to the different types of soils and climates.” Classic Portuguese grape varieties are found planted throughout the region, as well as some with more recognizable names — like Syrah, one of Hermano’s favorites for its consistency and richness.
Portugal is famous for its blends, and what originally drew Hermano to Quinta do Conde was the fact that a wide range of grapes really thrived here. He’s grateful to have such a robust range of grapes to work with — like a painter with many different colors!
“We try to deliver very drinkable wines — ones that are easy for people to really enjoy without having to be wine experts. The plan is to allow people to have pure pleasure every time they open a bottle, and bottles for every different occasion. Sometimes a unique combination of our local grapes blended together, or sometimes a maximum expression of each grape in our terroir.”
Joining Naked
Hermano’s egalitarian approach to Portuguese wines was discovered by Archangels at the 2011 London International Wine Fair, and he’s been producing wine for Naked UK ever since. He’s loved posting to Angels since his first vintage, and is looking forward to sharing not only his wines but his best harvest moments with the USA Angels!
“One of the craziest harvest stories has to do with the birth of Vasco, my son who is now 16 years old. Naturally, it had to be in the middle of harvest, but it was a lucky charm. It was really crazy, driving to the maternity ward and being there then having to return to the winery, since in the middle of September it can´t get busier! Looking back now, I guess this will be a good story to tell to my grandsons, but at the moment, it was really pure adrenaline and a very special and unforgettable moment.”
