Hugo Truter
Hugo is in the amazingly lucky position of having some of the best grapes in the world to draw on...without having to pay top drawer prices
- Winemaker at a co-op called Wamakers Vallei, a crowd of small vineyards each too small to set up on their own
- Without commercial pressures to squeeze the last drop out of each grape means Hugo has the ideal palette on which to paint his masterpieces
- He picked out the very best grapes, lavished them with love and attention, and hey presto!
Hugo Truter's Story
Hugo Truter's Story
The winemaking philosophy at our winery is simple: Ripe fruit, gentle handling and attention to detail.
Oh, and not forgetting motivated producers, dedication, passion, patience, never thinking you're the best, remembering the basics, not burning bridges...
Winemaking is a fantastic career - and something I've wanted to do since visiting the Kanonkop Estate many years ago (which has been described by many as the South African equivalent of a Premier Cru). Having seen the passion they put into their work, I knew this was what I wanted to do.
It can be a pretty intense industry to work in at times - including working for 48 hours on the straight waiting to press wines - but it beats having to sit in an office all day feeling cramped!
I love the freedom of being able to express yourself through making wine - as there are so many different styles that can be created."
