24th June update - (3rd sample of 12): Bottle 3 of 12 now (partially) drunk. Still an incredible wine at its price point. Poured the first half glass without aeration for the sake of comparison and the tannins were more evident than when I previously tasted. The second half glass was served through the aerator and tannins were still there, but less to the fore. The third (full) glass was double aerated and the smooth silkiness of the previous bottles returned. Still very much a 4.5 star wine. I'm a cynic. I like a bargain. Are those two mutually exclusive? The Prologue When I came across the link, I dithered, dallied, procrastinated, added to basket, removed from basket, read the detail again, added to basket, removed from basket, slept on it, added to basket, pressed the button (nothing happened) pressed the button again (nothing happened) checked my basket and two six-packs were there. It was a sign. I caved and purchased..... Act 1 After a couple of days away, I decided this was to be the red for Sunday evening. Poured into the decanter through an aerator and left for 45 minutes while we prepared a pretty non-descript evening meal. On pouring, we (I was accompanied by two white drinkers) were impressed (me) and put off (them) by the dark red colour and also by the red fruit aroma which came out of the glass straight away. The initial tasting was a joy. Smooth and fruity but with great depth. Tasted like an older vintage as the different fruits had really developed to such an extent. Act 2 Such was the unexpected smoothness for such a strong (14.5%) wine that it slipped down rather too quickly and a second decanter was found ready to decant a second bottle through the aerator whil the first one was being drunk. The first glass of the second bottle followed seamlessly and could have been from the same bottle. Discretion was the better part of valour though and the remainder was left in the closed decanter overnight for Monday (when it more than hit the spot again) Epilogue Ten red bottles standing on the rack Waiting for their owner to look at them and crack I plan to keep them for a while and sample every couple of months to see how they progress. 4.5 stars (89/100 - highest ranking I've given under this scoring system) scoring hugely in all categories and maximum in Value: £8?
