Mick Schroeter's Story
Mick’s story begins in Barossa Valley, the heart of South Australia Wine Country. He set his sights on winemaking early on – at 12 years old, he joined his winemaking father and uncle for harvests at legendary Penfolds winery.
The pull of the industry was strong – so much so that Mick left school early for his first job in a winery lab. While earning his stripes, Penfolds acquired the winery, bringing Mick full-circle to follow in his dad’s and uncle’s footsteps.
Fast forward a few years more and Mick’s hard work earned him a full ride scholarship to study winemaking and viticulture at Roseworthy College.
Upon completing his degree, Mick hopped right back into the red winemaking team at Penfolds and began rubbing shoulders with industry giants like John Duval, Peter Gago, the legendary Max Schubert – and Angels’ very own Australian star, Daryl Groom.
Mick’s skyrocketing career took another turn when he set off on a study tour of the Chile and Argentina wine industry, a trip he parlayed into an around-the-world adventure with his wife.
Along the way, he met up again with his mentor Daryl Groom – “my good friend Groomy,” as he says – halfway around the globe to work a harvest at Sonoma’s Geyser Peak winery.
By the end of harvest, Mick had an offer to lead Geyser Peak as Vice President of Winemaking.
“It was an enormous decision for us to make,” Mick recalls, “but had we not taken the chance I think we always would have wondered ‘What would it have been like to live and work in California.’”
In the end, Mick and his wife took a leap of faith on the promise of Sonoma: “We made a five-year commitment which is now 30 years and counting.”
Today Mick's a Sonoma icon with vast regional expertise and a deep love of the area’s Sauvignon Blanc. Among the many feathers in his hat, he helped turn Geyser Peak’s Sauvignon Blanc into the gold standard for the variety in California. On top of that, he’s also the only two-time “Winemaker of the Year” winner at the London International Wine & Spirit Competition.
But there’s still one adventure awaiting this globetrotting star – making his very own line of Sonoma wines with the help of your funding. Thanks to Angels, Mick’s writing the newest chapter of his legendary career – and you’ve got a front row seat!
“The Angels create a real sense of freedom to be able to craft the wines that both I and they will enjoy,” Mick says. “After many years of being constrained by costs, budgets and the corporate world, it's great to be FREE!”
