Falanghina Strione 2007
by Gerardo Vernazzaro

  • The absolute top that can be attained with Falanghina, with the juice fermented on the skins during the entire period of fermentation, just like a red wine
  • Fermentation in large oak casks, with weekly stirring of the fine lees and only partial malolactic fermentation
  • Golden in colour, full-bodied, complex and pure, a candidate for the cellar if you can be that patient

"I am a very energetic young man who strongly believes in the indigenous grape varieties of home, the Campi Flegrei region in Campania. This DOC, or designated vine growing region, and of which its flag bearers are the white Falanghina and the red Piedirosso, is right in the middle of Naples’ urban sprawl fighting a lost cause against speculation and real estate, making the vineyards of Chateau Haut Brion in the suburbs of Bordeaux look distinctively rural.

You could call me a true city farmer"

This golden wine deceives the brain into thinking it will be more like a sweet dessert wine, but it is a full and flavoursome Falanghina with a delcious light oakyness (not harsh like the old southern hemisphere chardonnays were). Like all the wines from Cantine Astroni, it has a clean, pure taste which allows you to enjoy every aspect of it's peachy-apricotyness with a gentle dry finish. Sadly, I only ordered one bottle - if t comes back in stock I will buy some to lay down (self-control willing!).

Unusual wine this one with a dry start followed with a almost mulchy after taste, like the smell of autumn leaves. Scrummy with rich summer food and also passable at room temperature, do allow to air though as the taste changes.

This is unusual, one of the most interesting whites I have had in a long time. Noticeably deep golden in colour, and not a big nose but a dry, slightly tannic edge which stood up incredibly well to the roasted pepper we ate with it. Very different, very worth trying. I'm off to order another three bottles. Cheers. Si.

A nice, creamy taste. Nice change from Chardonnay & Pinot G.

A golden hue suggests a richness absent from your average white. The flavour backs it up but is short-lived. It's got a character that will develop well with age.
