Looking after our planet and our people

Read about the steps we’re taking to create a sustainable wine industry, that’s better for everyone.

Changing the wine industry for the better

Naked exists to change the wine industry for the better. With a proven track record improving the lives of winemakers and wine drinkers, we know we’re best placed to make serious progress in protecting our planet and our people.

Winemaking

Many of our winemakers are passionate about sustainable winemaking. Some take additional steps beyond standard sustainable farming practices by adopting organic methods. These include the use of composting and the cultivation of plants that attract insects beneficial to the health of the vines.

Sustainable practices in these vineyards can also extend to actions that have seemingly little or nothing to do with the production of grapes such as providing areas for wildlife to prevent animals from eating the grapes and allowing weeds and wildflowers to grow between the vines.

"I’ve been making wines for so many years, which has brought me closer to the nature. I try to eat and drink as organically as possible so in the next two years I’m aiming for all of my wines to be organic.

It’s not just about organic wines, I try to encourage biodiversity in the vineyard. In my vineyard in the Priorat, we’ve built ponds for the amphibians and we’ve planted over 20 different types of plants. Many of which are aromatic plants which can pollinate, so they are great for the bees and many other insects."

Packaging & Delivery

We’ve always been passionate about stripping out anything unnecessary, whether it be heavy bottles, pricey labelling or the middleman. Getting your wine to you in the most sustainable way is high on our agenda - so much so we’re working with experts in the field to educate and inform us so we can make material improvements that will benefit the planet.

Bottling

Unsurprisingly, glass is our biggest cost and continues to be the wine industry’s most significant issue right now.

We’re taking positive steps to reduce glass use. We’ve introduced the Montaria bag-in-a-box. 3 bottles in one recyclable box and no glass in sight. With 89% of 2500 customer ratings saying they would buy it again. It’s looking like a sustainable win for everyone!

Labelling

Our labels and advertising meet the legal requirements, but we don’t stop there. We’re one of the first wine suppliers to introduce detailed allergen advice on our website. It means we are now well positioned to provide even more information to help you understand exactly how our products are sourced and produced.

Distribution

Bulk shipping and bottling reduces CO2e from transportation. We’re committed to reducing the amount of wine we transport in bottles, across the globe. In the UK we bulk ship 25%.

Yodel plays a vital role in our effort to implement environmentally friendly behaviours around delivery of our wines. There are over 7,000 Yodel Stores nationwide, enabling customers to pick up/return their ordered items via a Yodel Store at their most convenient time and location. This means fewer delivery vans on the road, reducing pollution and congestion.

Our People

Without our people, we’d achieve nothing. For them to know we’ve got their back is vital, and fighting for what’s important to them, is important to us.

Office life

This year we trained zero waste champions to address concerns about a future of food scarcity, water shortages, and depleting finite resources.

As a result, we've revised our contract with suppliers of food into the office and operate a 100% reuse policy, switching to using our own plates and cutlery (we had to buy a few more but we’ll get the ‘use’ out of them).

We separate waste as much as possible by having integral food, cardboard, glass and general bins in most kitchens.

Giving Back

Making a meaningful difference to the wine industry and to the lives of others, means giving back to those that need it most.

We’re proud to have supported:

Responsible
drinking

We do everything possible to ensure that our products are enjoyed responsibly - not because we’re told to, but because we recognise that alcohol abuse continues to be a challenge for societies across the globe and we want to help.

We strive to strike a balance between corporate responsibility and personal freedom to help you make informed choices. Continuous education and support for our people means a self-aware workforce who know exactly what to look out for… and look out for one another.

Our Values

These are the things that make us - well, us. They're are at the heart of everything we do - how we treat our winemakers, our Angels and each other, the way we work... basically, they're why we get up in the morning.

You, our Angels

We know we'll achieve great things, if we work together. Originally launched as a staff group, Green-Wings’ aim is to champion our sustainability plan and bring it to life for our colleagues and customers. To improve its reach and realise its ambition we have since branched out to give Angels a voice through our online groups.

“We are looking forward to collaborating with you to understand your top priorities and design innovative solutions for a sustainable future”.
