Irene Paiva's Story

"Hello fellow wine lovers. I am very pleased to be working with Naked Wines with my very first own release!

I have toiled for many large vineyards for 20 years as a winemaker but have found true pleasure in creating my own wine.

Growing up in the city, I found I was at my happiest on holidays in the countryside -  which led me to study Agriculture at University. It was there that I soon discovered my passion for wines and decided to specialise in wine making. Once I graduated and began work, I soon went on to work for some of the most renowned wine producers in Chile.

After working on mainly a consultancy basis for the last few years I couldn't wait to get back to more hands-on wine making.

Naked Wines (and yourselves of course!) have given me the opportunity to plant my own 5 acres. My Château as I like to call it! Because my wines are being sold while they'e being made, it gives me far more time to focus on the wines themselves without having to spend my time marketing and selling them. It also saves me about 40% off my normal costs, so that money can be channelled back into the wines to help increase quality.

I love making wines on a human scale. The extra love and attention they receive really shines through. Its great to get back to handling the wines through every stage. From picking the grapes to bottling and labelling the finished product myself. What could be more satisfying?!"

The first thing we noticed was how dark this was in the glass. We took this to be a good thing and it turned out to be the case. On the nose powerful, brambly and with a whack of almost overripe fruit. In the mouth, initially pepper and then wintry spices and some tobacco. The alcohol doesn't dominate and the tannins are smooth. Overall the taste is warm and comforting, like a big hug from someone you love. For a relatively young wine there's good persistence (must be barrel ageing).

But then...just when you thought it was all over (and we wouldn't have been annoyed if it had been) late, late on there's a a palate-cleansing wash of vanilla to complete the happiness.

We're hooked so there's more on order.

Loved it - a proper red. Big, bold and anything but bland. Starting with rhubarb, cranberry and stewed plums; finishing with a deep, dry, leathery spice. A proper red indeed.

Oh dear! I think I've died and gone to heaven...
What was that, Andy?
Had one or two bottles of this now and, oh boy! I'd been saving myself for another one.

We had it with what I can only describe as "Italian tapas": a small home-made beany lasagne dish in tomato sauce with some extra strong vintage cheddar and natural white beans from France, meatballs in tomato & basil sauce with a sprinkling of parmesan, and some garlic & mozarella flatbread. Seemingly quite cheesy, but it wasn't overpowering...

What we got from the wine was a selection of soft fruits, including peaches and blackcurrants, with a nice amount of chocolate and smoked tea on the nose. Absolutely fantabulous! And great finishing it after food.

The greatest blends allow you to taste all the components without blurring them.
This wine achieves those objectives without any fuss whatsoever.
It's a stonker, there are no two ways about it!!
Winter? What winter? I feel very warm inside...
Thank you Irene, salute!

Yep - 5/5 is an underscore. One of NWs "pickle me in this when I die" wines. Don't need to say anymore.
Buy it, Decant it. Leave it, enjoy it, but DO NOT share it !!

I just wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas Irene.
Enjoy the sunshine!
Not too cold here for the time of year (last year we had a lot of snow), so can't complain too much.
In fact, with all these lovely wines to choose from, at least we can feel warm inside.
All the very best for 2012.
