Sam Plunkett The Halo Effect Shiraz 2017
About the wine
Stylish and beautifully balanced with fruit from Sam's favourite vineyard
- This wine gives Sam the opportunity to incorporate new technologies and techniques in his winemaking to showcase wines from around the state of Victoria.
- The fruit for this wine was from the Gentle Annie vineyard, which Sam has been working with for over 20 years. This wine is full bodied and well balanced with luscious fruit flavours, think red fruits, blackcurrant, black pepper and spicy note from oak... deee-lish!
- Intense flavours, full bodied but a bit more restrained than your standard Aussie Shiraz... this is superbly stylish and beautifully balanced, you'll love it!
Best before
This Shiraz will have two lives - I enjoy it now for the attractive aromatics and youthful primary fruit. But it has the structure (enough tannin and acid) to let it mature for 5-7 years and evolve into a more complex savoury and rounded wine.
Serving advice
Serve at a coolish room temperature, say 16-18°C, no need to decant.
Food match
We have a great butcher in Avenel, and ideally we'd have a piece of aged beef from Scotty to go with this Shiraz. But in truth it's pretty versatile wine - any red meat, and perhaps follow on with a hard cheese instead of dessert.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Sam Plunkett
- Legend is a word we sometimes overuse, but in Sam's case, it's true. Over in Oz he’s regarded as one of their greatest living winemakers. Getting on for a thousand medals and trophies to his name, including the daddy of them all – the Best Shiraz in Australia Trophy at the 2010 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.
- Yet if you met him, you’d probably mistake him for the gardener. He’s one of the most down-to-earth, approachable blokes you’ll ever meet. He wears a beat-up old hat and drives a beat-up old pick up, and when he’s not in the vineyard, you’re likely to find him up a ladder with a wrench in his hand.
- From being in a pretty sticky situation back in 2011 when he was unexpectedly bought-out by his business partner, Sam has just achieved his lifetime dream; he’s converted an old textile factory into his very own gleaming high-tech winery and it’s all thanks to Angel funding!
