About the wine

Sam's intense, deep crimson nectar is exactly what a fine wine should taste like
  • Sam’s Gentle Annie Cab is the very definition of a fine wine. Opulent, full-bodied, rich and powerful, it’s packed with black fruit and balanced with lovely herbal and spicy notes from the oak.
  • It's delicious now. But this wine will be build in refined savoury complexity over time… so if you have a secret hidy hole, it's the sort of wine you could stash for a while and come back to.
  • Whatever you do, just don’t open this on a Tuesday night when you’re tired. This wine deserves the best meal, the best company, the best occasion, and it won’t let you down.

Best before
Drink now to 2028. This wine can be enjoyed now, but some will find the tannins a bit firm as a youngster, so if possible leave it a year or so for some of the tannins to evolve and become softer. This is certainly one of those wines which will have another life as a more savoury complex mature wine with 5-10 years bottle age.

Serving advice
Serve at 16-18°C. Open/Decant 1+ hours before serving

Food match
Go Vegan with Stuffed Peppers with black beans and corn! Sam also suggests: 'This is a pretty versatile red, and would go well with a wide range of red meats, and hard cheese. To pick just one dish, I'd go for roast lamb. The protein in the meat will make the tannin feel softer. And along with the blackcurrant primary aroma is a slight herbal note typical of Cabernet, and this will be a complementary flavour like the sprig of rosemary Mum sometimes puts with roast lamb. Delicious!'

Meet the winemaker - Sam Plunkett

  • Legend is a word we sometimes overuse, but in Sam's case, it's true. Over in Oz he’s regarded as one of their greatest living winemakers. Getting on for a thousand medals and trophies to his name, including the daddy of them all – the Best Shiraz in Australia Trophy at the 2010 Great Australian Shiraz Challenge.
  • Yet if you met him, you’d probably mistake him for the gardener. He’s one of the most down-to-earth, approachable blokes you’ll ever meet. He wears a beat-up old hat and drives a beat-up old pick up, and when he’s not in the vineyard, you’re likely to find him up a ladder with a wrench in his hand.
  • From being in a pretty sticky situation back in 2011 when he was unexpectedly bought-out by his business partner, Sam has just achieved his lifetime dream; he’s converted an old textile factory into his very own gleaming high-tech winery and it’s all thanks to Angel funding!
