Pedra a Pedra Tinto 2018
About the wine
A premium drop from a small but mighty vineyard which boasts some of the Douro's very best vines
- Quinta da Pedra Alta may be a small vineyard with only 35 hectares to it's name, but as Portuguese Winemaking wonder João Pires knows, those 35 hectares hold some of the Douro's oldest and most choice vines. Quality like this is something that most winemakers wouldn't even dare to dream of.
- These vines are like old friends to João, who grew up in the area. He knows all too well that the potential wrapped up in each parcel of grapes from Pedra Alta should not to be underestimated. This is a vineyard with staggering elivation and a long history of vine growing, which makes for an impeccably structured and elegant wine.
- The Pedra a Pedra Tinto is a bottle very close to João's heart, and the care and precision he has poured into it can't be missed. With flavours of red fruits and spice notes, this is a full flavoured, fruited wine, boasting the Douro's iconic structure, elegant tannins, and long finish.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Joao Pires
-
Not many children dream of a career turning grapes into wine, but João Pires knew from an early age he was headed for the vineyard. After completing a degree in winemaking in 2005, he went straight on to his very first vintage.
-
His expressive wines are critically acclaimed, catching the attention of Decanter who awarded one of his Portuguese classics an almost unheard of 97%-rating and platinum medal.
-
João's winemaking career is centred in the region where he was born and raised. The Douro native knows the land like the back of his hand and knows all the best grape-growing spots - he's involved in every aspect of winemaking, from hours tending the vines to bottling the wines, it's a labour of love.
