Former Chief Winemaker at Craggy Range, now making wines exclusively for Angels

    • Rod downed tools at one of New Zealand's most iconic wineries, to set-up-shop alone, and luckily for us, he knows the whereabouts of the very best grapes that Hawke's Bay and Central Otago have to offer.
    • He has rave reviews from journalists, wines dripping in medals and oodles of Parker Points under his belt, and thanks to Angel funding and backing, he's now making wines exclusively for you.
    • Using his prize fund from being crowned your Winemaker of the Year 2014, Rod was able to add a stunning Gisborne Chardonnay to his range. Years on and his wines never fail to impress -  they don’t call him Rod the God for nothing.

Rod Easthope's Story

"A short note to say hello from the other side of the world and how excited I am to be teaming up with Naked Wines. It’s been a lifelong dream to be my own boss, and the Naked Wines’ model is finally making that dream come true, so thank you.

I’ve had a fantastic seven years at Craggy Range, my current employer, but I can’t wait to get started on this new project, and produce an exclusive range of wines under my own name – at scale. It’s liberating to make wines directly for customers, rather than winery shareholders, importers, distributors etc - who remove or blur the connection between the winegrower and the people who actually drink it!

You’ll be pleased to hear I know where all the best grapes are hiding, and it’s great to have the backing to put them to best use and share them with you – so watch this space!"

I am biased towards a New Zealand SB - especially Rods! Outside of that I love big bold reds from Italy, a Californian Zin that is daring and smooth IPA when watching the rugby!!!

My wine adventure was kick started by Naked Wines. Before that my wine buying was the odd £5 supermarket bottle, but a combination of my own maturing and hitting these forums as a New Angel in June 2015 led me down the path of far more engaging wine conversation and appreciation. If it’s any solace to Naked (worrying about their affect on the weak willed) I’ve seen similar epiphanies in my appreciation of craft beer, whisky and gin. It’s probably an age thing and they do say Life is too short to drink bad wine! Salut
