Black Isle Brewery

Sensational Scotch ale from a brewery determined to save the planet, one pint at a time

  • Black Isle was founded by David Gladwin in 1988 - a beer-lover who dreamed of making exceptional brews that didn't cost the earth.
  • The brewery owns 125 acres of certified organic land where they grow the vast majority of the barley they use for brewing themselves - everything extra is bought in from neighboring local farms.
  • The folks at black isle feed the spent grain from each brew to their flock of Hebridean sheep who in turn provide wool for staff clothing.

Black Isle Brewery's Location

Black Isle was started by David Gladwin in 1998. An unemployed beer lover, he set out to make world class beer using barley and hops grown on organic farms as nature intended, without the use of destructive chemicals. The brewery has bought 125 acres and turned it into a working organic farm growing organic barley to make our delicious beer. We grow our own barley but not quite enough for the amount we need in the brewery and so we also buy some barley from other local organic farms. We have 200 black Hebridean sheep that were rustled 10 years ago from the Culloden Battlefield and a beautiful jersey cow that produces milk for our tea and coffee. The spent grain from the brewery mash tun is fed to our livestock, which also includes hens and horses. In December 2015, we got our own polytunnel! We now grow organic salads and have an even larger veggie patch. We see ourselves and what we do as a natural link between our traditional cultural heritage and the contemporary craft beer world and we're delighted to share that with Naked Wines.
