Comment on: Villebois Loire Sauvignon Blanc 2009
In my experience, the Loire Valley whites can be rather "tinny". This one was lovely.

Lots of competition locally around the STEEP hill of Sancerre but yes this is just about this price range. If it was £1.50 less i would buy more but i think there is just so much to sample from the village and the surrounding. One for the winemaker: The gooseberries flavours coming from a cooler side of the slopes? or more chalky than clay in the ground?
I know there is quite a change in the terroir around Sancerre...

A really pleasant wine, and very drinkable, but is it worth the price? I am not sure?

Ah, this was sooo much better that last night's Petit Villabois. All the rough edges seemed to disappear and instead there was a pleasant, crisp, dry and fruity wine with a touch of acidity that fades as the wine warms in the hand. There was still that gooseberry like tartness to start when chilled, which mellowed to pears and something, maybe a crisp english apple. Following on from last night's comment I still favour the Heidi Siegried SB but this is coming up on the rails...

Pleasant, easy drinking, but not much character. Kimbao is much better value at this price.

"Being as green as possible in my vineyards is very important to me. We try and use a very limited number of 'products' in the fields, and we also green harvest in order to optimize the quality of the grapes and minimize production per hectare. Finally, we use a technique called 'effeuillage' - the reduction of leafs to increase the sun and light exposure of the grapes. We have a great team here at Villebois, with Thierry Coutant who runs and supervises the vineyards, and Pascal Gibault, our other resident winemaker."
