Villebois Brut NV
by Joost de Villebois

Villebois Brut NV
  • All the high-elegance of good Champagne, with none of the acidity of the cheap stuff.
  • Fantastically good value and easy to quaff. Great for garden parties.
  • Angel, John said "I recently drank a lovely bottle of Krug... wish I'd bought 9 bottles of this lovely bubbly instead".

"Being as green as possible in my vineyards is very important to me. We try and use a very limited number of 'products' in the fields, and we also green harvest in order to optimize the quality of the grapes and minimize production per hectare. Finally, we use a technique called 'effeuillage' - the reduction of leafs to increase the sun and light exposure of the grapes. We have a great team here at Villebois, with Thierry Coutant who runs and supervises the vineyards, and Pascal Gibault, our other resident winemaker."

Hey Joost, (and Miguela) really looking forward to meeting you again! (We met at the London tasting, I was the nine hundred and thirty fifth person to shake your hand that evening you must remember ;-) We had friends in the Cher region so I know the Loire region reasonably well. It will be a pleasure to share it with you.

I am literally kicking myself for not getting my hands on more of this divine bubbly. I'm cautious when it comes to brut or champagne (not sure I understand the difference) - so many of them are acidic and actually very unpleasant to drink but you quaff away because you've spent a small fortune on a bottle of the nasty stuff.
Villebois could not be more different. Velvety with a slight tickle of bubbles that gently caress the inside of your mouth - it was a joy to drink and a total revelation. Brut does not have to be tart and brusque. It can be smooth but still with enough fizz to nuzzle away at your taste buds.
The only downer is that this gorgeous brut is no longer available! A travesty that I truly hope NW will resolve at once... Even if it means kidnapping the winemaker and forcing him to conjure up some more of this magical drink!*
* Disclaimer: I am not in any way responsible for anyone actually kidnapping him, although I will more than happily pay for any resulting wine.

This is a very decent sparkling, and you definately get more than you pay for especially at Angel prices. Lovely nose, slightly biscuity, good fruit , and a nice clean finish. The mousse perhaps not as intense as some of it's more expensive cousins but not something to quibble over. I will buy this again when the sold out stickers are removed
