Rais Vigne del Fuoco 2007
by Gerardo Vernazzaro

  • From the South’s most important red grape varieties, Aglianico, Piedirosso and Primitivo, from low yielding vines resulting in a deeply coloured, intense red
  • All three varieties are fermented separately in stainless steel and after blending aged in second year barriques
  • Rich and intense, but with distinct minerally notes and refreshing acidity striking a perfect balance between fruit and oak notes

"I am a very energetic young man who strongly believes in the indigenous grape varieties of home, the Campi Flegrei region in Campania. This DOC, or designated vine growing region, and of which its flag bearers are the white Falanghina and the red Piedirosso, is right in the middle of Naples’ urban sprawl fighting a lost cause against speculation and real estate, making the vineyards of Chateau Haut Brion in the suburbs of Bordeaux look distinctively rural.

You could call me a true city farmer"

We would appear to have got a bad bottle as both my husband and I thought it was so awful we couldn't drink it!! In my husbands case I can't remember the last time he refused to finish any bottle. It really had nothing good about it at all. Very disappointing.

When I opened this bottle I got a whiff of ripe dark cherries! We really enjoyed it's initial mouthful of fruit followed by a slightly dry, earthy finish. We drank it with roast duck - a brilliant match, though I say so myself.!

I was not sure what to expect from this wine. I struggle to find worthwhile less expensive Italian wines. Unfortunately for me the search continues. There was nothing offensive but nothing remember-able either. I found the wine to have a subtle sweet finish that competed with the lamb ragu. It was lacking any spicy, bold dense flavours. I will not be buying this wine again.

Very nice South Italian red blend - could possibly be worth keeping a bit to soften the tannins
Had it with the last pheasant of the season and really enjoyed it

A good Italian wine with a lovely depth of flavour but a fresh acidity that cuts through rich tomato sauces, a good food wine as it has quite a tannic finish
