Raats Original Red Blend 2008
  • Bruwer uses all the grapes which didn't quite make it into his ?37 a bottle MR de Compostella
  • This wine has many of the same incredible characteristics - Bruwer describes it as having "similarities to the beauty and the beast" meaning serious power yet elegance
  • A great wine to splash out on. It ain't cheap but it is worth every penny!

I've been hiding a couple of bottles of this away for a while, but decided last night in a mad extravagant moment it was time for one to go.

It was as enjoyable as I remembered. Bold flavours of cherry and dark chocolate with a hint of spiciness.
Really does benefit from breathing a while but well worth the wait.

Nice one Bruwer

As a new AA for Bruwer and having enjoyed Bruwer's Chenin Blancs I ordered this Red Blend. Really enjoyed the initial nose but then was a little disappointed with the first sips. However the longer the bottle was opened and the longer it remained in a large glass (difficult) the more it came to life. The more I tasted it ,the more I got from it in the form of cherries on the tongue but finishing with a slight bitterness, which I like. On reflection, I should have decanted or, at least, opened the bottle at least an hour earlier.
I concluded by deciding that this was a very good wine and worthy of a re-order. I can't decide whether I admire Bruwer's lack of pretension by calling it just Red Blend or should it have a big fancy name. Having enjoyed the wine as much as I did, I would tend to go for the latter.

Sorry Bruwer, not a fan of this one. Good nice nose and good initial taste, but then feels a little thin and astringent in the mouth.

Meet the Winemaker

Bruwer Raats

"I did not choose winemaking, winemaking chose me. I remember picking grapes in 1992 in Stellenbosch, and I was so happy, I knew that if I became a winemaker I would feel like a king. I believe in sustainable farming. This means that whatever I do, I try and leave the soil in a better condition than when I found it. I have realised, however, that whatever techniques you use as a winemaker, none have such a big impact on the process as having a positive energy in the vineyard and in the cellar (one of my key points!). It's vital that everybody you work with focusses on making a unique and special wine, rather than applying fancy and clever techniques."
