What's this about?

The fastest way for us to help you find the wines you'll love (and avoid the wines you won't ) is for you to spend 30 seconds to tell us about your wine tastes. We use these answers, together with your wine ratings to build a detailed profile of your personal tastes. We match your taste profile to our wines taste profile to find the wines that match. Even if it's a grape you don't know, from a place you don't know, made by a person you have never heard of. For example, if you tell us that you like Rioja, we have an Argentinean Malbec that you will adore. And a Spanish Grenache that will blow your socks off.

Raats Original Red Blend 2008
by Bruwer Raats

Raats Original Red Blend 2008
 • Bruwer uses all the grapes which didn't quite make it into his £37 a bottle MR de Compostella
 • This wine has many of the same incredible characteristics - Bruwer describes it as having "similarities to the the beauty and the beast" meaning serious power yet elegance
 • A great wine to splash out on. It ain't cheap but it is worth every penny!

This wine needs lots of patience - not immediately "accessible", however if you drink it over 2-3 days it rewards. Loved it, but a bit pricey.

Bruwer, I liked your Chenin quite a lot, despite disliking your red blend, but I very much dislike YOUR style. If you do not like peole telling you and others their oppinion about your wines I do not think NW is for you. You certainly lost a costumer mate. And lets live it at that!

(BTW, I noticed some spelling mistakes in my original posting and aftert correcting thise the system took my changes as a new posting. Maybe Rowan and NW should check this out.)

Sorry to deviate from the fans on this one - but it is just not my sort of red wine.

I have always struggled with South African wine - I have tried many in the hope of finding out why so many rave about it. I had high hopes that Raats was going to change my mind - it didn't! I wil keep trying though!

Wish I had read other comments before glugging tis one - although not sure I could wait 24 hours as Jon recommended!! Perhaps NW will havw pity on me and give me the chance to try it again at an attractive discount?

Bruwer Raats

"I did not choose winemaking, winemaking chose me. I remember picking grapes in 1992 in Stellenbosch, and I was so happy, I knew that if I became a winemaker I would feel like a king. I believe in sustainable farming. This means that whatever I do, I try and leave the soil in a better condition than when I found it. I have realised, however, that whatever techniques you use as a winemaker, none have such a big impact on the process as having a positive energy in the vineyard and in the cellar (one of my key points!). It's vital that everybody you work with focusses on making a unique and special wine, rather than applying fancy and clever techniques."
