Picco del sole Falanghina 2009

Picco del sole Falanghina 2009
  • If you think Falanghina is a splinter terrorist movement, you would be wrong
  • It is one of the most exciting, and one of the least known white wines to come out of Italy since Julius Caesar made himself unwelcome some time ago
  • Straw white colour with greenish hues. The bouquet has notes of fresh fruits as apple, banana, pineapple ; there is also an aromatic note which gives elegance to this wine

Very pale yellow. Aged honey on the nose initially, then gave way to minerals and a hint of lemon. Light bodied with a touch of white fruits initially but that wears off quite quick leaving plenty of lemon and minerals on the palate. Short length. Simple and refreshing. Went well with pizza. We enjoyed it.

Interesting wine with a balance of ripe, fleshy stone fruit and a certain sharp, mineral, tartness which makes me think of Italy. This is a ripe wine, but not overripe, and quite different to most whites you can buy from around the world.

A lovely fresh nose of honey. On the palate, an initial hit oh honey giving way to candied lemon and finishing with a slight lemon sherbet which seemed to linger forever. Good acidity keeps this wine very fresh. We ate this with smoked rapeseed oil poached salmon with a lemon and lime dressed potato salad. It is almost certainly better chilled right down.

Meet the Winemaker

Alessandro Botter

"We believe just like our grandfather did that our future success really lies in making the most of the fabulous indiginous grapes our region has to offer. Yes we have had many experiments with grapes from all over the world but time and again the ones we end up pouring into our own glasses at the end of the day are the traditional grapes my grandfather started growing all those years ago. For many in the UK I know the Italian grape names may seem strange, unfamiliar and tricky to pronounce (especially after a few glasses) but please do try them. I am proud of every drop!"
