Perez Cruz Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
by German Lyon

  • A long time personal favourite of just about everyone at Naked Wines
  • Produced in a million dollar winery, using the very best grapes and technology
  • Would sell for $100 a bottle if it came from Bordeaux or Napa

"I work with an absolutely fantastic team at Perez Cruz, and I always believe that a good wine is the product of a team rather than an individual. I have the luck of being the visible face and the one that receives the congratulations for the wines, but everyone in the team is key for the final result, from the person who prunes the vineyard, to the worker that sticks the labels etc."

I had got this mixed up with another bottle and had been happily giving it away to people thinking it wasn't any good. What was I doing!!!** This is a lovely bottle of wine, nicely structured, not too soft with just a bite to take the edge off some fatty food. I had it with some Lamb chops the other evening and have been kicking myself ever since for giving away bottles of this.

The wine business seems to depend on the fact that all the good wines one found 12mths ago are no longer available so that the customer has to start again – yes, we know the usual reasons, but it is a one way street that means everyone is always seeking dependable reviews and suppliers – which, in itself is an industry. (Ever tried chasing what the FT or someone similar recommends at a weekend? One has to be quick) I was hoping Naked would be different, but so far I am still waiting whilst entangled in being an Angel, cash-back schemes, vouchers and the like (inc. unlikey groups like the J.Oliver one, started by staff). Meanwhile (when I run out), I am lucky enough to be able to go to an Italian producer near Bergamo and bring red wine home once or twice a year. Their vino di tavola wine (1.0 litre bottle at 6.5 euros) is as good as anything twice the standard bottle price in the UK or on Naked. (And it is 13% instead of a vicious 15% – why do producers drive the alcohol content up and up?) The same can be said of their better wine at about 8.5 euro. But everyone has such tales – so how come we have to pay so much through people such as Naked (no, it's not tax). This Perez is typical of being an OK wine that (in my humble opinion) is simply over-rated and over-priced. And it isn't in stock.
