Parrot Valley Cabernet Franc 2008
by Bruwer Raats

  • A stunning, spicy, Cabernet Franc, hand-crafted by Bruwer exclusively for Naked Wines
  • If this was in the supermarket under some fancy brand label, it would be three times the price
  • A seriously smart buy, Bruwer's other wines sell for up to £37 a bottle!

"I did not choose winemaking, winemaking chose me. I remember picking grapes in 1992 in Stellenbosch, and I was so happy, I knew that if I became a winemaker I would feel like a king. I believe in sustainable farming. This means that whatever I do, I try and leave the soil in a better condition than when I found it. I have realised, however, that whatever techniques you use as a winemaker, none have such a big impact on the process as having a positive energy in the vineyard and in the cellar (one of my key points!). It's vital that everybody you work with focusses on making a unique and special wine, rather than applying fancy and clever techniques."

Lovely wine, although not the luckiest bottle I've had my hands on having kicked two glasses over the carpet on consecutive nights! The little I tasted before clumsiness triumphed made this the nicest wine I've tasted from naked thus far. Admittedly I'm a novice, yet saying I really liked something because it tasted good should be what this is all about.. A little sorry to see it is now sold out, however, not surprised given how good it was.

I spotted a bottle of Parrot Valley Cabernet Franc 2008 the other day. I could'nt believe that a Cab F sold for such a low price and needless to say I was somewhat apprehensive to try it, fearing that it may be of lesser quality. My taste in wine leans more to the classic styles.. and so when I read "OAKED" on the front lable as well a reference to 16 months oak maturation on the back, I decided to give it a try.

I shared this wine with a friend whom shares my taste in wine that same evening.. and we were both pleasantly surprised!

The wine had good structure, but was also very approachable at an age that is generally very youthful for a Cab F. Lovely oaking was present and intergrated in such a way that the piquant Cab F fruit could come to the fore in textbook varietal definition. The more the wine breathed, the spicy and herbacious side revealed itself with pencil shavings and fennel.

I'm very glad that there are still wineries / winemakers that cater for an apparently dying breed of wine lovers that appreciates the old school values of well judged oaking, elegance and overall balance - Bravo!

24-hour headaches after only a couple of glasses... and it wasn't just me.
