Falanghina Falangos 2009
by Gerardo Vernazzaro

  • From the ancient Falanghina grape variety, which may have been the legendary Falernum, the wine so prized by the Romans
  • Ungrafted Falanghina vines grown on their own rootstocks on the slopes of the extinct Astroni crater amid Naples’ urban sprawl
  • Reminiscent of Riesling and Chardonnay at the same time, and fermented in stainless steel to keep its freshness and fruit

"I am a very energetic young man who strongly believes in the indigenous grape varieties of home, the Campi Flegrei region in Campania. This DOC, or designated vine growing region, and of which its flag bearers are the white Falanghina and the red Piedirosso, is right in the middle of Naples’ urban sprawl fighting a lost cause against speculation and real estate, making the vineyards of Chateau Haut Brion in the suburbs of Bordeaux look distinctively rural.

You could call me a true city farmer"

This wine was the only real disappointment I have had from Naked Wines. The wine was "spritz", which I did not expect and did not like one bit. It had a sour edge on the tongue and was so distasteful that I poured down the drain most of the bottle and the remains of the two glasses I had poured for my wife and myself.

When I mentioned this to my son-in-law, Aaron Goldstein, who I introduced to Naked Wines some time ago, he told me he had a similar experience with this wine and that he had reported it to you. I have not been able to work out if I purchsed this wine before or after he reported back to you, but in any event this wine should be removed from sale immediately. You cannot afford to sell something as awful as this.

Wasn't sure if the fizz was intentional, but didn't really like it

Wine was cloudy and tasted of mud. I wasn't corked as no taste or smell of vinegar. Just lousy.
