Falanghina Falangos 2007
by Gerardo Vernazzaro

  • From the ancient Falanghina grape variety, which may have been the legendary Falernum, the wine so prized by the Romans
  • Ungrafted Falanghina vines grown on their own rootstocks on the slopes of the extinct Astroni crater amid Naples’ urban sprawl
  • Reminiscent of Riesling and Chardonnay at the same time, and fermented in stainless steel to keep its freshness and fruit

"I am a very energetic young man who strongly believes in the indigenous grape varieties of home, the Campi Flegrei region in Campania. This DOC, or designated vine growing region, and of which its flag bearers are the white Falanghina and the red Piedirosso, is right in the middle of Naples’ urban sprawl fighting a lost cause against speculation and real estate, making the vineyards of Chateau Haut Brion in the suburbs of Bordeaux look distinctively rural.

You could call me a true city farmer"

Wow, so light and delicate it's almost as if you're not drinking it...but in a good way. I usually go for the extra dry whites, the flinty, grassy, mineral ones. But this is one of the perfect summer wines, not to messed about with by consuming with food, but by sitting on a patio, in a garden, or (if American) sitting on a porch and just glugging away. A real sundowner of a wine - just such a shame it's all sold out.

A very delicate wine with a very subtle flavour of flowers. Delicious but would be overcome if drunk with strong flavoured food.

This was every bit a delicious as I had hoped. It's smooth yet fresh style conjured up fond memories of Naples and the surrounding area. We drank it with grilled lemon sole - it's delicate nature and the crisp finish were perfect. Thank you.

Far from forgettable one mouthful of this starts you on journey of a smooth fruity refreshing start thats jumps onto a slow slide to a tangy finish. Not as dry as others I have tasted but nonetheless a reasonable 'light' wine. Due to the relative delicacy of this wine I chose a dish of pan-fried Mahi-mahi fish seasoned with saffron and roasted red pepper and black olive couscous. Dish and wine were a perfect match!
