Falanghina Colle Imperatrice 2008
by Gerardo Vernazzaro

  • Falanghina from low yielding vineyards on volcanic soils closely monitored by Gerardo
  • After crushing the grapes the skins remain on the juice for 10 hours followed by fermentation in stainless steel and large acacia casks
  • A richer, more complex version of the grape while retaining its signature freshness and structure, Naples’ answer to Chablis!

"I am a very energetic young man who strongly believes in the indigenous grape varieties of home, the Campi Flegrei region in Campania. This DOC, or designated vine growing region, and of which its flag bearers are the white Falanghina and the red Piedirosso, is right in the middle of Naples’ urban sprawl fighting a lost cause against speculation and real estate, making the vineyards of Chateau Haut Brion in the suburbs of Bordeaux look distinctively rural.

You could call me a true city farmer"

Different and very drinkable. Soft smooth but with undertones of fruit and herb. Lovely if you want a change.

a step up on the Falanghina ladder, this wine comes from a single vineyard. Low yields and a slow fermentation in steel and large oak vats have resulted in a full-bodied, well structured wine showing opulent white fruits and fine chisseled acidity on a creamy palate. The finish goes on and on. Great with fish based pasta dishes (gnocchi with shrimps for example!) but goes equally well with chicken in cream sauce (cock au riesling, but this time with Falanghina) and veal. And very good value for money!

Starts with a crisp bold edge, the essence of a warm summer followed by a fruitiness smoothly which leads the way to refreshing aftertaste. Delightful with chicken dishes and dare I say, veal, though will hold its own against seafood dishes as well. Will make you want to throw boring old Pinot Grigio out the window when you realise just how passè it has become compared to this shining gem.
