Castillo Catadau Gran Reserva 2003
by Jorge Caus-Pertegaz

Castillo Catadau Gran Reserva 2003
  • It’s not just common old Reserva, this is Gran Rreserva - and in Spain this actually means something
  • Only top quality grapes are used – the grapes that have the best fruit, structure and intensity
  • And the wine is matured slowly, in toasty oak barrels to give it that mellow, smooth, caramel and vanilla flavour. Yum!

My kind of red. Rich and fruity, yet subtle as well. The reds I like, you can tell you are drinking. They hit your palate, in a pleasant way and leave you bursting for the next mouthful. This hits the spot

Every bottle of this monumental wine is better than my very first taste. It is now approachable, even welcoming to newcomers, and gives up its dark velvety secrets with generosity. It is a supple wine that cradles your tongue but does not squeeze it with tannic harshness. It seems to be maturing quickly in my sub-optimal storage conditions but no matter, I am down to my last bottle and even that is being eyed for consumption. I have increased my rating of this wine as it has revealed more and more of its silkly depths.

I tried this excellent wine, well, many times already. For the price, compared to 15 quidish high street prices in London wine shops from same rank of course, it's really bargain and recommended choice. Not absolutely as smooth as could be, just tiny little a bit wild (not young:) than expected from gran reserva but ... when you find yourself onto bottom of first bottle can't help self to not open another one ;-) Especially when you drink it with lovely swordfish steaks. Na zdravi a dobrou chut! - it's Czech cheeeers and bon apetit

An excellent wine equal to a good Rioja. Smooth and not over oaked. Very good with a steak.
