Ryan and Joe O Connell

American father and son duo who've settled in France to live the winemaking dream

About Ryan and Joe O Connell

  • Ryan and his Dad Joe were "just regular people who drank a lot of wine" until it became "more cost effective" to just make it themselves
  • From the States, they packed their bags, put all their eggs in one basket, and bought a vineyard in rural France in 2004
  • Judging by all the fantastic reviews (from the likes of Jancis Robinson), their gamble is paying off and we're chuffed we've discovered them!

Ryan and Joe O Connell's Story

"When we upped sticks and left the States in 2004, we were just regular people who drank a lot of wine. We realised that it would be more cost effective for us to just make it ourselves!

A lot of people think that vineyards are a big investment, but we're saving tons of money when you think of all the overpriced garage wines we were buying in the States.

Working in the vines and winery is really rewarding. Much more rewarding than working in an office. You just go out, breath fresh air, work with your vines, and drink a bunch of delicious red wine.

Tasting the fruit of your labour with friends, family, visiting strangers etc is far more fun than ever imagined.

What are our five key philosophies?

  1. Wine is made in the field before it ever gets to the winery
  2. If somebody says that making wine is easy, you probably don't want to drink their wine
  3. Finishing, flitering, forcing (and other things that start with F) are for people who are in a rush to bottle. For real wine, you've got to be patient
  4. Sulfites suck!
  5. Gravity is awesome. Use it. Pumps are for septic tanks. Avoid them

We're also quite a Green pair. We live in the middle of the vines and see them on a daily basis, monitoring the weather and their development. We only treat when necessary and we opt to use synthetic products when they are more effective and ecologically sound. We find a beautiful balance between the green of the vines, the reddish-brown earth and the blue sky i.e. we're not just certified rule-followers who fit some bureaucrat's definition of organic!

A lasting thought for you...

The guy who works harder, laughs harder and drinks harder... he's got good wine.

Enjoy the wines, and come and visit us if you're ever nearby (11620 Villemoustaussou), we'd love to meet you!"

A rich red wine, quite potent at 14%, with a soft peppery taste. Smooth like it's stable companions with subtle fruit flavours.

This is the most expensive bottle of wine I have ever brought from this site, but boy is it worth it! The wine is smooth on the toungue and unusually fruity for a French red. It was finished, sadly, far to soon.

We shared it with friends on a recent holiday, they loved it, even though one was not a great red fan, she rated it above other similar priced wines we had with dinner.

Up late Ryan.
Good man.
Got to say its been a bit quite on the posting front for a while. I am saving the the Proprietor's Reserve for the birth of my first Grandchild in 8 weeks time. Getting a bit old now and never thought this would happen. So something special to wet the baby's head with. I believe i will be seeing you in London later this month. Might be be able to show you a few interesting sights.

Happy slurping

As soon as my wife walked into the room she knew she was in for a treat, as the aroma of this fragrant wine met her! Rich, fruity and with more body than Marylin Monroe, this is the sort of wine that tempts you to open another bottle, but at 14% you need to treat it with respect!
It proved to be a perfect match for the Venison that accompanied it. If it was a car it would be a Jaguar XFR; powerful, refined and subtle.

If I remember correctly, this was my least favourite of the four O'V wines I tasted in Carcasonne. On its own it's quite tannic and I think far more 'French' in its style than the other three wines.Tried it with roast pork dinner, and the food smoothed it out considerably, letting the berry fruit flavours shine through. I don't think this is a wine for quaffing, but with food it's lovely.
