Caroline's Story
"Destiny led me to where I am today…..With a Chemistry degree under my belt I decided to go on to do a Masters in Oenology. At the time our professors made it clear that “The girls will work in the laboratory while the boys will head off to become the directors of the wine co-operatives. I wanted to prove my professors wrong! This together with my desire to take on the quality of wines in light of the demands of the consumer, led me to where I am today!
I love the “power” of blending! It is like being a conductor of an orchestra: every varietal possesses different notes, soft or dominant, round or deep, sharp or strong, light or profound, bold or subtle. By conducting this orchestra the wine is born!
My key wine-making philosophies are Patience, listening, curiosity and an to keep an open mind. We try to be green as possible here, adhere to the mandate of “Terra Vitis” and apply the philosophy of sustainable viticulture. One challenging result is that the game population (wild boar, baggers, rabbits, etc) has flourished in our own vineyards at Château Canet, giving us competition on who “harvests” the grapes first.
What cheeses me off most about my job? Cork corks: because they can ruin all your efforts and the hard work that went into making the wine.
If I could compare myself to any wine it would have to be a Syrah: mature...I am 53 years old, soft...I am 67 kilos and generous...I am broke!"
