Meet Benjamin

"I would like to introduce myself as a new winemaker for Naked Wines. I am the first in our family to be making wine. My dad is an accountant, and the dazzling world of offices and figures didn't seem quite as enticing as getting dirty in the vines!

It was actually my best friend's dad who influenced me in becoming a winemaker. I was always at their place, listening and observing. I liked his lifestyle. I then had the opportunity of working with him in his cellar, Le Terte Roteboeuf, in St Emilion and it went from there.

My time abroad

My career in the wine industry has bought me more than I'd ever expected. I met my wife whilst I was in Australia making wine. We spent two months together during harvest and married 1 year later in Cape Town where we also spent a bit of time. Twelve years later we're now settled in the South of France making wine together... which includes this exciting new project for Naked Wines!

Thank you Naked Angels!

Working with Naked means means I can put all my energy into growing the grapes and not have to worry about buyers pushing down the costs and compromising the quality of my wines... so thank you in advance.

Some of my proudest moments in my career were firstly in 2005 when I had a wine listed in the Top 100 Best Wines in the World by the Wine Spectator. Secondly when I got 95 points from Parker with an Australian wine that I made in 2006. Pretty happy about that... and here's to winning more awards with you support."

Hello Naked people, my name is Benjamin Darnault. I live in a small hamlet called Calamiac, which is situated just outside the village of La Liviniere, in the Languedoc region of southern France. I have the strong belief that this little pocket of the Languedoc is a real heaven for producing interesting, exciting, different wines.

This is one of the oldest and largest vineyards in the world, where people have been cultivating grapes for wine since the Roman times. Exploring the area, you feel like you’ve stepped back in time and that things have almost been left untouched.
As a winemaker it’s an exciting environment as the old bush vines are capable of producing great and authentic ‘old terror’ wines – and all this can be enjoyed at a very reasonable price.

My experiences working all round the world in the wine industry have propelled me back to this magic area with the knowledge I could make remarkable wines for an interesting price.

Sadly, a number of vignerons are pushed at this moment to pull out they old local variety vines. The price they getting for their grapes is absolutely ridiculous. Paying them an extra 15-20p per bottles can make the difference. I see in my project with Nakedwine as a real opportunity to combine this “fair-trade” allowing us to spend a bit more on the grapes and produce old terroir wine, taking the best of the old world with the freshness of new world influences.

I have been following Naked Wine and its community of wine lovers for months now and have felt inspired and energised by it! Now I’m here and very happy to announce it! I would like to thank Naked Wine for making this possible. Their philosophy mirrors the optimism and enthusiasm I feel for what I do and working together with them, I hope to offer you an exciting product

Superb wine, after a brief decanting (30 minutes), rich fruit and smooth and all over a game of cards. The in-laws wanted me to open another - invite me for dinner and we shall see... as one of the Naked Angels I would like to wish M. Darnault good wishes for the future.

Very good with food, rich meaty chicken or beef. Would work well with Stroganoff too.

Lovely wine, needs to breath for a bit. Silky smooth, friendly character and good after-taste.
