Amancio's Story

"Since I was very small, I would visit cellars with my father and I loved going to the vineyards, especially when the fruit was on the vine. I could eat berries to test their ripeness. Nowadays, as child labour is out of fashion, I just use a refractometer; such is progress!

Nothing is too extreme in my struggle for good wine. Defending vines from herds of boar, labelling 30,000 bottles by hand through the night for an urgent order when the printers made a mistake (and the labels would not fit the equipment), trying to coax a reluctant tank to finish the malolactic fermentation with blankets and hot water bottles... you name it, I've done it!

If asked what contributes to making the perfect glass of wine, I would say -

  • Cleanliness
  • Healthy, happy vines
  • Imagination
  • A practical cellar
  • And a decent glass to assess the product!

And I'm also a fan of minimal intervention in the vineyards.

What do I love about being a winemaker? Really, I think that working with something that springs up from the earth, and working with that fruit to turn it into a drink, is what gives me enjoyment – as it gives many other people enjoyment too. Oh, and I also love meeting supermarket buyers (NOT!)."

I am sorryto hear that youa re not happy with the comments about Amancio's wines. I believe youa re being ratehr hard towards the person you refer to in your note: NW are giving us a wonderful opportunity to share experiences and opinions about wines and we should encourage people to do so, even if they do not like our favourite wines, because their opinion is as valid as ours; I have been attending and organising wine tastings for 10 years and there has not been a single session where everybody agrees about the rating of the wines, and that is because we are all different, have different tates and have different expectations.

I am supporting Amancion and his wines fromt he beginning, and I must say that although his wines are fine, they could be much better hence my rating of them. I dont find them having no boy no taste, but I dont find them amazing either but something int he middle. Does that mean that I know nothing about wine? may be but nobody better than me knows what I like and I dont.

I have for a while been an 'Angel' in a modest way for Amancio Calcerrada. I have a question; has he withjdrawn in disgust from the lack of favourable comment and even some unjustly unfavorable ones? (his wines are not available as at August 2009).

If someone is on to a 'good thing' it is of course best to keep quiet about it, or the price will surely go up; and so far I have kept quiet with regard to Amancio's wines. But with his creations not presently available and with such comments about Finca Escribano as "very poor quality wine. No body. no taste" - (that contributor either knows nothing about wine or seeks to reserve the market of Amancio's wines for himself! I wonder...) I want to re-order because I believe I know something about quality when I taste it - and have won wine-tasting competitions to boot, so it is probably not just a pervese preference of mine.

Having opened a bottle of Finca Escribano (Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon), do let it BREATH a while... By all means sip it when you open it but then taste it again an hour or two later or even the next day or two. The difference will amaze you! Forget passé epithets such as 'fruitness and blackberries" and suchlike. Think about a cross between wild blueberry conserve and old shoe leather (tannin) with a touch of annise. COME BACK AMANCIO, someone here absolutely LOVES your CATALONIC CREATIONS!

The 6 I received were all red Rioja (the selection has since changed) - 3 were "traditional" tempranillo, 3 were blended tempranillo & syrah. I found the former bottles rather too dry and bland, the blends were a bit better, but not much.
