Caroline Mooney's Story
"We have both have been winemaking in the Yarra Valley for close to 10 years after growing up in the region. In 2008 we released the first wine under our own label, Bird On A Wire. The first release, the 2008 Bird On A Wire Syrah, was awarded the 2009 "Under the Radar" prize, judged by our fellow Yarra Valley winemaking peers for best up-and-coming new producer.
Spurred on by the success of the 2008 Syrah, we pursued particular vineyard sites from which to source fruit for the 2009 Chardonnay and, in 2010, Marsanne.
The focus is directed towards the quality of the single vineyard sites, selected for their suitability to each variety. Small production volumes and the winemaking techniques employed aim to showcase these vineyards. The care, skill and commitment of the growers to producing outstanding fruit are paramount factors in helping us achieve the end result.
The Chardonnay is grown high up in the cool Upper Yarra sub-region, where conditions are prime for highlighting the fineness, precision and restrained nuances critical for showing this variety at its best.
In 2006 we both travelled to the Rhone Valley in France and worked the vintage, an experience from where much of the influence for the style of our Bird on A Wire Marsanne and Syrah originates. These two varieties have been purposely selected from distinct sites on a single vineyard in the Yarra Glen area. The combination of lean gravelly soil, slope & north-easterly aspect of the vines produce Syrah and Marsanne of restraint, structure, texture and varietal expression.
Vintage 2010 was a fantastic season in the Yarra Valley following a difficult few season as a result of drought and fire. We hope you enjoy the wines as much as we have enjoyed making them."
